Nearly every room is filled with Old Master paintings that follow you with their eyes, including Joshua Reynolds’s “ Self-Portrait Shading the Eyes” (1740s), Lavinia Fontana’s “ Portrait of Antonietta Gonzalez” (1595), whose sitter has a hair-covered face, thanks to hypertrichosis, Rembrandt’s “ The Abduction of Ganymede” (1635), and an abominal version of Leonardo da Vinci’s “ Lady with an Ermine” (1489–90), with the subject’s face rotten and the animal turned demonic. As with the constantly changing haunted abode in House of Leaves, you can never be sure the door you enter from will lead you back the way you came it might be replaced by a brick wall, or nothing at all. That and the beautiful design, which is based on 19th-century architecture. Layers of Fear is billed as a “psychedelic adventure horror game,” and while its linear narrative of clicking to find objects, sudden scares, and mounds of disembodied baby doll heads has a lot in common with other horror video games (notably P.T., the “playable teaser” for a cancelled edition of Silent Hill), the art angle makes it stand out.

While the man doesn't look like the Painter to qualify as a self-portrait, it does suggest the possibility that the Painter is bisexual. Full of regret, he brings his last work to a room full of his wife's portraits and sets fire to them, burning his house and himself in the process. He finally realizes it has all been for nothing, and that the painting will not bring his family back. In the Selfless/Wife & Child Ending, he paints his wife and daughter. He fails to acknowledge his wrongdoings, believing that all of the suffering he went through was necessary for him to achieve true perfection in his art. In the Selfish/Self-portrait Ending, he paints himself. After discarding the painting in a room full of them, he goes back to his studio to begin it all over again. In the Neutral/Loop Ending, he fails at creating his Magnum Opus. His works were not well received by the critics anymore, and he would take his frustrations out on his family.įeeling abandoned by her husband and believing he was more in love with his paintings than her, the wife committed suicide, and his daughter was eventually taken by social services.īy the beginning of the game, he wanders the house trying to finish his Magnum Opus. With his sanity rapidly wasting away, he could no longer paint like before. Soon enough, he turned into an alcoholic and would lock himself in his studio for days, neglecting both his wife and daughter. This accident devastated them both, but the Artist became increasingly obsessed in "trying to fix" his wife. She was partially disfigured in the event, and lost the ability to play instruments. For a while, they lived happily.Įverything took a turn for the worse however, when his wife was caught in a fire on a department store. They married, moved into the house in which the game takes place, and eventually had a child. He was a very well received upcoming artist who fell in love with a talented musician.
